Fan Crush Friday - Lucy Bestall, Owner of What Ted Wore
Tell us a little bit about you + your business :)
Hello! I’m Lucy, Mama to Ted and owner of What Ted Wore.
What Ted Wore is a Bristol based kids clothing brand that specialises in embroidered clothing for toddlers. We love colour, cosy sweatshirts and cute slogans!
How did you get into your field?
I’ve got a degree in fashion design, and have previously worked as a visual merchandiser and visual designer.
As well as running What Ted Wore I also take on freelance VM roles.
How do you juggle having a child with work?
Ted goes to nursery once a week, so I usually cram a majority of What Ted Wore work into that one day. Everything else is done when he’s snoozing!
What would you be doing if you weren't doing what you do?
I feel so lucky to be able to run a small business and look after Ted pretty much full time. It’s so great getting to hang out with him and do all the Mum stuff, but then having the chance to be creative as well.
I knew when I had Ted that I didn’t want to go back to work full time, so if I wasn’t running What Ted Wore I’d probably take on more freelance work. Something that I could fit around him really.
Who and what inspires you in terms of fashion?
My Mum! She always looks amazing and just knows what suits her. I’ve learnt from her to not just follow a trend because everyone else is wearing it. If it doesn’t suit you, then don’t go for it!
I’ve always loved Gwen Stefani (from when I was about 14, it’s been a long girl crush) and her style. She always looks effortless and mega cool without trying too hard.
What's your go-to look?
A striped top. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with stripes really.
I’m a sucker for comfort, so I’d wear it with MOM jeans from ASOS, a pair of Reeboks and a leather jacket.
What’s in your wardrobe this autumn/winter?
I’ve bought the most amazing puffer jacket from Topshop which I can’t wait to wear as it’s super cosy. I’ve also stocked up on some grey jumpers from HM, a faux leather skirt from Zara and buckle boots from Topshop.
I got a knitted hat from Acne last year as a birthday present, so I’m looking forward to bringing that out again.
I also really want a Bella Freud x Fred Perry jumper, but I think I’ll have to wait and see if I get it for Christmas.
If you could add one item from the What They Wore Store to yours or Ted’s wardrobe, what would it be?
I’ve got my eye on a red or yellow Carhartt jacket for Ted – I’m just waiting for his size to come up!
Also, I love a Christmas jumper, the cheesier and more Christmas-sy the better, and What They Wore Store has some super cute ones.
